Movie Review: ARRIVAL

Professor Louise Banks (Amy Adams) is one of the most brilliant linguists in the world. When aliens start appearing on the Earth in twelve random places she is tasked by the US Government to enter start communicating with them and eventually interpret their language.

Arrival is one of the best motion pictures of recent times and continues to strike on the trend of very good and scientifically inspired sci-fi films we have had in recent times with Gravity, Interstellar, and The Martian. This films adds to that very good pantheon of modern Sci-Fi and it just might be one of the best we've had yet.

EDITORIAL: Denis Villeneuve To Bring Back 'Blade Runner' For A New Generation

Blade Runner 2049 is one of the most interesting films coming out next year. It is being directed by acclaimed filmmaker Dennis Villeneuve (whom we've been talking about all week), shot by iconic cinematographer Roger Deakins, and will even see Harrison Ford return to reprise his role as Rick Deckard. Ford is joined by Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling, who I am sure will be the "hero" of the movie, while Ford plays a similar role to what he played in The Force Awakens.

Over the last week, we have been showcasing the films of the great Denis Villeneuve, doing reviews for almost all of his films, leading up to his new feature, Arrival, which opened up this weekend.  I decided to keep going on this path with today's short film review.  We will be doing a couple more pieces centering on Villeneuve over the next couple days, so please keep an eye out.

Arrival is a science-fiction film that follows the story of a linguist who is recruited by the military following the arrival of alien spacecraft around the world to try and learn to communicate with them and find out why they are here. It is a deeply cerebral science-fiction story and not action packed as one might expect. The film is obviously directed by Denis Villeneuve and stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and Forest Whitaker.

As the London Film Festival continues, I have gotten the chance to see several great films, and this one is no different.  Arrival is a true futuristic sci-fi classic with a great twist, and a potentially career defining role for Amy Adams.
