Sundance 2021 Review: JOHN AND THE HOLE (2021)

Throughout the Sundance Film Festival, I have seen some wonderfully beautiful films, some terrible films, some that make you ponder the universe, and some that make you ponder yourself. I’ve laughed, I’ve cried, I’ve been terrified, and even confused. John and the Hole is one of those films that confused me at first, but then made me think about the world and the people in it. How you just never really know what a person or persons may be dealing with in their own lives, and how the world is full of terrible things, and yet it just keeps on spinning. I’m not sure if the filmmakers meant for these kinds of thoughts to spring up in their audience’s minds, but they did for me.

Review: BLACK MIRROR: BANDERSNATCH (2018)

Netflix, now you’ve gone and done it.

The latest outing for the Netflix original, Black Mirror, has come in the form of an interactive movie.  “What does that mean?”, you may ask.  Well, the entire film is set up like a “choose your own adventure” story, as the plot centers around a game programmer in the mid-80’s who is making a new game based on one of those books.  This is such a unique and ambitious project.  Allowing the watcher the opportunity to dictate their viewing experience is something we’ve only dreamed of, but somehow Netflix and the people from Black Mirror were able to pull it off.

London Fields tells the story of a clairvoyant, femme fatale named Nicola Six who has been living with a dark premonition of her impending death. She begins a tangled love affair with three uniquely different men: one of whom she knows will be her murderer.

Movie Review: MOTHER!

Sometimes you come across a film that you know almost nothing about, and it knocks your socks off with just how deep it really is.  Mother! is that film for me.  I saw the first teaser and the first trailer for this film, but still had no clue what it was really about.  My first assumption was that it was some sort of horror movie, which it’s really not.  If anything, it’s more of a thriller than anything else.  I had also heard that the trailers for this movie are very misleading and that the film isn’t what you expect, so going in I was able to alter my expectations and go in with an almost clear slate, truly not knowing what to expect.  And that, I believe, was the best possible thing that could have happened for me.

Throughout the years, several films have been made about a group of people forced to kill one another to survive.  It's not the story that's unique, but the way in which it is told.  Films like Battle Royale, Circle, The Hunger Games, and now The Belko Experiment, all take this simple story and spin it in a very unique sort of way, which is why I can still enjoy films like these.

Movie Review: COLLATERAL

Collateral is a film about a cab driver and a hit-man, played by Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise respectively, who come together for one unexpected night. It's directed by Michael Mann and written by Stuart Beattie.

I was recommended this film by a bunch of friends who really love it. So going in I had my expectations set pretty high, and I have to say this film did not disappoint. The whole feel of the movie was cold and yet vibrant. They were able to convey so many ideas and themes between the scenes of action that once the film finishes you start to feel uncomfortable with the feeling of doubt on if you as a human being will make an impact on society.

Movie Review: GET OUT

Get Out is the directorial debut of acclaimed comedian Jordan Peele. This is a horror/thriller about a mixed race couple going to meet the girl’s white family out in the country where mysterious disturbing things seem to be afoot. The film stars Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Bradley Whitford, Caleb Landry Jones, Macus Henderson, Betty Gabriel, and LilRel Howery. I thought this was a solid first outing and a generally decent thriller with some interesting concepts at play.

Rear Window...Wow, what a truly suspenseful, thrilling, and just flat out terrifically entertaining motion picture. The master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock, is on full form here, keeping us on our toes throughout the film, always second guessing what route the story is heading. By focusing the camera primarily on the courtyard of the apartment, we, the audiences, are always on edge, always waiting for something to happen.

Movie Review: A CURE FOR WELLNESS

A Cure for Wellness is the new horror-thriller feature from acclaimed director Gore Verbinski. The film tells the story of a young upward moving company-man for a Wall Street financial firm who is sent to Switzerland to bring the reclusive CEO back from a sanitarium to handle some issues back in New York. At the sanitarium the young protagonist realizes that there may be more nefarious things going on than apparent from the outside. The film stars Dane DeHaan, Mia Goth, Harry Groener, and Jason Isaacs.

Movie Review: ELLE

Michèle (Isabelle Huppert) seems indestructible. Head of a successful video game company, she brings the same ruthless attitude to her love life as to business. Being attacked in her home by an unknown assailant changes Michèle's life forever. When she resolutely tracks the man down, they are both drawn into a curious and thrilling game—one that may, at any moment, spiral out of control.

Movie Review: SPLIT (Review #2)

When three girls are kidnapped by a man (James McAvoy) with 23 different personalities they have work out which of those personalities will help them escape and which of those personalities will will try to stop them. Casey (Anya Taylor-Joy), a teen with a troubled past, seems to be the only one who might just actually be able to understand and communicate with the madman.

With a premise so wild and fascinating it is hard not to be hooked when you go into the theater. Coming out I can't help but call myself disappointed in a film that has so much potential wasted, thrown away in a structure that can't keep focus of what it's doing.
