Thanksgiving Editorial: 2016 Retrospective

2016 has been a tough year, everyone. Regardless of your political leanings or your social status, a lot has happened this year to make a lot of people very, very depressed. Even within the film community, we’ve been hit with some dismal disappointments (from Independence Day 2 to Insert-Comic-Book-Movie-Here-That-You-Hated).

But, in America, today we are celebrating Thanksgiving -- a time to remember the good and be truly grateful. And, 2016 has given us much to be thankful for as film fans. Here’s my little trip down Memory Lane of, dare I say it, a DAMN good year for cinema-lovers.

Movie Review: GHOSTBUSTERS (Review #2)

Dr. Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) doesn't believe in the existence of the paranormal anymore, even though she wrote a guide to it in the past with her ex-colleague Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy). Yet, when she witnesses a full fledged stage 4 apparition her beliefs are changed once more and with the help of Yates, Holtzmann (Kate McKinnon) and Patty Tolan (Leslie Jones), founds a team to fight ghosts who are rampaging through the city.

Side By Side: GHOSTBUSTERS (1984) vs GHOSTBUSTERS (2016)

Welcome to another installment of SIDE BY SIDE, where we dissect the differences and similarities between two films, be it a remake/reboot with its original, a sequel with its original, or two similar movies. This week we will be comparing classic horror comedy, GHOSTBUSTERS, with the brand new Paul Feig remake.  Enjoy!

Movie Review: GHOSTBUSTERS (2016)

When the very first trailer for this Ghostbusters reboot hit the web, so much hate and vitriol flooded the internet, and I couldn't understand it, because I actually enjoyed the trailer.  Yes, it wasn't great by any means, and yes, some of the jokes fell flat, but overall it got me excited for the film, and rightfully so.  Now, like most people my age, I grew up with the original films and the animated series (which I absolutely loved), but to me they're not so sacred as to make me despise any sort of remake/reboot, unlike so many others out there.

EDITORIAL: Don't Fear the Reboots

Howdy, fellow film freaks, Robert here, and I feel the need to sound off about that misunderstood step-child of the modern movie industry, the reboot (or "remake", if you're of a certain antediluvian age). Running them down is a favorite pastime on the Intertubes; the movie clubs I follow on Facebook maintain a running and spirited debate about them. In the expected style of the Intertubes, this debate often disgraces the schoolyard's noble traditions of reasoned discourse. But it still bears discussing; we have gotten a lot of reboots over the years, and there appears to be no end in sight.
