Welcome to another installment of WHAT'S ON NETFLIX?, where we pick out a series or film currently playing on Netflix and review it for the fans. This week's selection is the original animated series about the joys and pitfalls of puberty, BIG MOUTH, which premiered on September 29, 2017 on Netflix.
This funny and irreverent series was created by Nick Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Mark Levin and Jennifer Flackett. It's based off Kroll's and Goldberg's experiences growing up in New York. Kroll also voices some of the characters, including his fictional self.
My mom turned me onto this series and I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. There are ten episodes and each one is funnier than the next. The series centers mostly around three friends: Jessi, Nick and Andrew. Their bodies are going through changes and they are trying their best to deal with it. Sometimes growing up is daunting.
I related the most to the second episode because it had to do with getting your first period when wearing white. Something quite similar happened to me growing up. Periods and the color white certainly don't go together. I definitely felt Jessi's pain, especially after her mother's reaction.
This series does deal with serious issues such as homosexuality, relationships, and bullying. But, it does it in a humorous way and that is what makes this series worth watching. All the characters are hilarious, especially Coach Steve, who says some really interesting things...
The changes the characters are going through bring out the hormone monsters. Andrew ends up giving into the Hormone Monster's demands. Is that why teenagers are so moody? Jessi also has a Hormone Monstress, voiced by Maya Rudolph, who encourages her to embrace her sexuality and buy a red bra.
This series has numerous heartfelt and humorous moments. The friendship between Nick and Andrew is a great part of the series because it shows us that we are not alone in the growing up process. Going through adolescence is difficult enough, but it's always better with a friend.
Season 1 of this series has so far received a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and I'm not surprised. It's well written and doesn't rely on gross humor to attain viewership. However, it does contain sexual content and at times is crude. This series is meant to give its audience a humorous look at puberty and it does a great job of doing just that. If you have a good sense of humor and are not easily offended, then you'll definitely enjoy this show.

Nice! It was good to have come across this post. I have just started showing some series to my kids on Netflix and would love to add this one to the watchlist. They are finishing the series by Andy Yeatman for now and then can start this other series as well.
