Trailer Review: JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE

Is it a sequel? Is it a reboot? Do you care? The first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (yes, that's the real title) is here. Behold!

Now after watching that, can you seriously tell me this thing is even going to be a patch on the 1995 original? There's so much wrongness here, from the cliched motley band of high school stereotypes - the hot chick, the nerd, the frumpy outcast and the black guy - to the forced update on the Jumanji game, to a story that looks, at first impression, to be little more than by-the-numbers jokes. Do you think Nerd-Boy and Lady Frumpington will learn confidence? Do you think Selfie Queen will learn to be less shallow? Do you think anyone over the age of fifteen will be OK with Karen Gillan's outfit, no matter how strong and legitimately badass she turns out to be?

And what, prithee tell, is a video game console doing in a school? Unless that "jungle adventure game" features an as-yet unseen NPC who pops up every few seconds to spout factoids about jungle flora and fauna, thus making the game educational, I call shenanigans on a lazy plot device. Oh, and the title is cribbed from the single most overplayed song in the entire Guns n' Roses catalog. This flick seems to be trying to set a new low in audience pandering.

Ok, here endeth the rant, but you can always tell when a reboot picture was made by people who appreciated the original work (it has happened), and I just don't get that from this trailer. What do you guys think? Is this just a cynical attempt to milk nostalgia for a quick buck? Let's put that sadly neglected comment section to use.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle premiers on December 20th.
