Trailer Review: THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS (Super Bowl TV Spot)

Howdy fellow film freaks, Robert here. What's that you say? Another Fast and the Furious movie? Don't mind if I do. Check out the trailer below.

Yes, it's the eighth outing for Dom Toretto and his band of gearheads-turned-superheroes; yes, this is a big, dumb action movie with zero regard for the real abilities of even the average high-end automobile, or even the consequences that come with reckless behavior. But... I. Don't. Care. I love this series, and if this movie does kick off another trilogy, as has been suggested, then all the better, I say.

That said, there is that potential fly in the ointment, the rumor that Detective Brian O'Connor, played by the late Paul Walker, will return in CGI form for this installment, despite having been given such a beautiful send-off last time. I'm not crazy about that, but if it's a minor thing -- if O'Connor's role is a little more Princess Leia and a little less Grand Moff Tarkin in terms of screen time, for example -- then I'm prepared to let it slide.

But enough speculation. Since this isn't the first trailer this movie has received, we get a little more detail this time, but only enough to raise more questions. Another previous adversary appears to be joining the Toretto Gang, Jason Statham's Deckard Shaw, though nobody appears to be particularly happy about it. But the big mystery is still Dom turning his back on his crew, the family which, we've been told for seven movies now, he would do anything for. Personally? I doubt the betrayal's genuine. I think he's doing it for their protection, somehow. But even if that is the case, I still want to know what dark menace could make Dom go to such lengths as to play the traitor. I won't be missing this one.
