Trailer Review: GHOST IN THE SHELL (Super Bowl TV Spot)

Howdy fellow film freaks, Robert here. Whether you like it or not, the long-awaited (so they tell me) live-action version of Ghost in the Shell will finally be released this year, and a new TV spot was released during the Super Bowl. Check it out in all it's glorious brevity below.

So ... okay, that happened.

Confession time, Occasional Reader: I cannot stand Ghost in the Shell. I've tried the original movie, I've tried the manga, I've tried the more recent Stand-Alone Complex, and the world of Ghost in the Shell just bores me to death. I can't seem to reconcile how a property that draws so heavily on cool things like cybernetics, superheroics, and robots doin' stuff can be so achingly tedious to watch. Maybe this version will get a little of the old American razzmatazz, but since we live in a world where people still worship the cinematic sedative that men call Blade Runner, I'm not holding my breath.

I also have no love for Scarlet Johanssen, though I will say this: she is the perfect choice to play the emotionally dead Major Kusanagi. Say what you will about a white woman being cast to play an Asian character -- I figure if black actors can play white characters, the sky's the limit -- but this may be the role ScarJo was born to play.

As for this spot, what can you really get out of 30 seconds beyond "the cult classic anime comes to life"? It looks gorgeous, and to my unadoring eye it seems there's been a fair bit of attention to detail in translating the animated version to live-action. A part of me kind of wants to see how they did the spider-tank scene for this version. But still: it's Ghost in the Shell, and I've given that property all the chances to win me over that it deserves already. Wake me when it's over.
