What's On Netflix?: THE LOFT

Welcome to another installment of What's On Netflix?, where we pick out a film currently playing on Netflix and review it for the fans.  This week's choice is the murder mystery thriller...THE LOFT.

Before I started this film, I wasn't really sure what to expect.  I had a basic knowledge of this film, but I had no idea it would twist and turn the way it did.  Right off the bat it grabbed my attention, and the whole "who dunnit?" story kept me engaged and guessing throughout the film.

The Loft tells the story of five married friends who conspire to secretly share a penthouse loft where they can carry out hidden affairs and indulge in their deepest fantasies.  But the fantasy become a nightmare when they discover the dead body of an unknown woman in the loft, and they realize one of the group must be involved.

Directed by Belgian director Erik Van Looy, this is his first American film and is based on the Belgian film Loft, which Van Looy also directed.  He did a great job of weaving this story together, with flashbacks, flash forwards, and three gripping twists which keep you guessing until the end.

This film had a stacked cast including Karl Urban (Star Trek), Wentworth Miller (DC's Legends of Tomorrow), James Marsden (X-Men), Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family), and Rachel Taylor (Jessica Jones).  Urban, Miller, Marsden, and Stonestreet are joined by Matthias Schoenaerts (who starred in the original film as the the same character) as the five main friends, Vincent, Luke, Chris, Marty, and Philip.

Karl Urban is great as always, proving that he really needs more leading roles in films.  Miller plays the quiet, mild-mannered guy very well, which is a nice change of pace from the last couple roles I've seen him in.  Marsden gave a good performance as well, and had nice chemistry with Rachel Taylor's Anne.  As an ensemble piece, they really managed to give depth to these characters, which is something that many films lack.

I really had a surprisingly good time watching this movie.  After hearing a lot of mixed reviews on it, I was worried that it wouldn't be very good, but I was thankfully wrong.  I loved the mystery element of this film, which kept me guessing from beginning to end.  And the multiple twists that take place were really interesting and enjoyable.  I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who enjoys mystery thrillers.

The Merc's Score: 8/10

  1. I added this movie to my watchlist as the plot seemed good but due to the mixed reviews I was unsure whether I should watch it. But after reading your review I think I will definitely give it a watch.
