Movie Review: TOMB RAIDER (2018)

Video game adaptations have always had a rough time finding their way, both financially and in quality, with only a handful making over $200 million at the worldwide box office, and only one coming in at the 50% or higher mark on Rotten Tomatoes.  And that one is the latest adaptation of Tomb Raider.  Now, don’t get what I’m saying confused…this isn’t the holy grail of video game movies, as its performance at the domestic box office has been quite poor, and it’s currently sitting at a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes.  However, this is a film that understands what it is, and leans right into it in all the best ways possible.

EDITORIAL: Video Game Movies and the Future of the Genre

Assassin’s Creed is out and by now you probably realize that most critics really don’t like the film and most of the audience find it adequate at best. This was meant to be the year for videos game films, but both Warcraft and Assassin’s Creed got generally lukewarm responses. So what is it? Are video game movies destined to fail? Are they simply not meant to be translated to the silver screen? That is what most people are saying, especially coming out of Assassin's Creed.

Movie Review: WARCRAFT (Review #2)

I have always been an avid fan of the Warcraft games and all it's lore, it started with Warcraft 3 for me and continued on into World of Warcraft. Furthermore, I have loved everything Duncan Jones has done so far with Moon (2009) and Source Code (2011), I feel as though his films are different and he is a very talented filmmaker. There has been a large amount of dislike towards this film but I'm going to say straight up that I loved it. It's not perfect, but I felt that there were so many great moments that outweigh the flaws, especially as I'm someone who feels as though I have a deep understanding of Warcraft lore.

Movie Review: WARCRAFT

It feels almost obligatory to give a disclaimer before starting this review: I have never, ever remotely had anything to do with the Warcraft lore and games. I had literally no idea what the story would be. Yet, I am a very, very big fan of fantasy and Duncan Jones, and that is why I was excited to see this film, despite the negative backlash it had in its first week of reviews, and let me tell you that I've rarely seen such unmotivated negativity. Despite not living up to its potential, Jones and Legendary Pictures have put out a very worthy fantasy film that was actually very close to being great...up until its last ten minutes.
