Welcome to another installment of WHAT'S ON NETFLIX?, where we pick out a film or series currently playing on Netflix and review it for the fans. This week's selection is the original, provocative series, OZARK.
Ozark stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney and premiered on July 21, 2017. At first audience members may be under the impression that Marty Byrde, played by Bateman, is your typical unsatisfied family man. But, first impressions are somewhat deceiving. He is a financial advisor who seems to have the ideal life, but as I watched this series that was not the case at all. Ozark has it all: greed, money, drugs and violence. However, I found this series endearing because of the performances of Jason Bateman and Laura Linney. Their acting resumes speak for themselves.
The storyline is familiar, a man tries to take care of his family by breaking the law. In this case, it is money laundering. After a shoot up at his office, Marty decides to uproot his family from Chicago to a summer resort town in the Missouri Ozarks. Did I mention he also owes a huge debt to a Mexican drug lord. His teenage daughter is especially not pleased with leaving Chicago. However, she makes friends with some of the locals who are a little sketchy.
There is one scene that stands out to me because it was both funny and disgusting. Marty was at work advising a couple on how to invest their money. When his co-worker came in and quickly took over. Marty had been masturbating and that is why his co-worker had to step in to finish assisting the couple. It's so bad, yet made me laugh.
I binged watched all ten episodes of the first season in two days. The location and acting really impressed me. Laura and Jason have a great chemistry onscreen. I've heard that this show is already being compared to BREAKING BAD, but, it's just the first season and I think it's too soon to compare the two shows just yet.
This series received a 65% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it just premiered last Friday and it is the first season. The complex plot and a great performance from Jason Bateman make this one series to keep an eye on.
The show never got boring and it kept me on the edge of my seat. If you are looking for something new to watch then give show at try, especially if you are a fan of BREAKING BAD.
