CBS Films/Lionsgate Releases New Character Posters for AMERICAN ASSASSIN

The promotional aspects of marketing a new movie always fascinates me. I love seeing what they come up with and how the studios/publicity companies work to make their projects stand out in a crowded market. When new movies are being promoted by the studios that made them, there is always a visual push to get their movie noticed by the audience and effectively entice them to go see the movie. Along with teaser trailers, one of the other visual aspects of advance publicity for a new film is posters. Be they the standard movie posters that have been used for years or, as in recent times, posters that individually highlight various lead characters in the movie.
American Assassin, which is set to be in theaters on September 15th, 2017, has recently released five character posters highlighting a specific character as promotional tool. Each poster is done in a white background with bold, dark hues of red & black mixed with grays. The characters are not quite flesh colored. More like a vague hint at bruising, which gives evidence to the violent nature of their journey in American Assassin. The colors stand out in stark contrast to the white background and the character images are slightly off kilter. The imagery lends to idea that not everything is as it seems about the characters or their place in world they are caught up in.

Even though the images are static, the posters still somehow convey motion and story about each character depicted in it. As each character is positioned on the character posters for American Assassin, it gives you the feel that these characters are like a chess piece with its own independent movements and not an ensemble where they move as one. To me, it’s an interesting way to bring attention to each character as an individual rather than a group crammed together with the same generic action in the background.

American Assassin follows the rise of Mitch Rapp (Dylan O’Brien) a CIA black ops recruit. Mitch is under the instruction of Cold War veteran Stan Hurley (Michael Keaton).  The pair is enlisted by CIA Deputy Director Irene Kennedy (Sanaa Lathan) to investigate a wave of apparently random attacks on both military and civilian targets.  Together the three discover a pattern in the violence leading them to a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent (Shiva Negar) to stop a mysterious operative (Taylor Kitsch) intent on starting a World War in the Middle East.

American Assassin is directed by Michael Cuesta is screenplay written Stephen Schiff, Michael Finch, Edward Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz, based on the American Assassin novel in the Mitch Rapp series by the late Vince Flynn. The movie is Produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Nick Wechsler.

American Assassin also stars British actor/martial artist, Scott Adkins in the role of Victor. With a cast like this, American Assassin looks to be an action-packed feature film.
