WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Batman v Superman' Breaks Records; 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2' Gives A Solid Performance

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of March 25-27 (Easter weekend) were Batman v Superman: Dawn of JusticeZootopia, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

The DC train is a go, with Batman v Superman bringing in over $400 million worldwide despite all of the negative critic reviews, and will hopefully continue to satisfy fans enough to push to the $1 billion mark.  We also saw Deadpool finally crack the record for highest worldwide grossing R-rated film of all time, with a total of $745.7 million, beating out The Matrix Reloaded, which had $742.1 million.

THE TOP 3:

1. BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

DC's second installment in their brand new shared cinematic universe, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, finally hit theaters this weekend, and the critics were not impressed.  However, the critics aren't the ones who ultimately decide the fate of this film, that would be the fans, and the fans have definitely spoken.  BvS brought in $166 million domestically and a whopping $420 million worldwide, breaking the record for largest worldwide opening of a superhero movie, and that's without China so far.

2. ZOOTOPIA

Disney Animation's newest film, Zootopia, managed to stay in the Top 3 during its fourth weekend, taking the #2 spot, dropping only 35.4% to bring in a solid $24 million.  This puts its domestic total at $241.4 million and its worldwide total at an impressive $697.6 million, and with no other animated films coming out for awhile, Zootopia is sure to continue to rise, hitting high numbers by the end of it's run, possibly even crossing the $1 billion mark.

3. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2

The sequel to the 2002 rom-com, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, officially hit theaters this weekend to great numbers.  It managed to bring in $17.9 million, which is a substantial increase over the original film's opening of only $3 million.  Combined with the foreign grosses, this film brought in a worldwide total of $26.2 million on an $18 million production budget.
