WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Revenant' Grabs Top Spot While Newcomers Fail To HitThe Top 3

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of January 22-24 were Ride Along 2, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and The Revenant.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

One of the big surprises this week was the large drop Ride Along 2 took, losing its dominance over the box office and landing in the #3 spot in its second week.  But the biggest shock is that none of the three newcomers, Dirty Grandpa, The Boy, and The 5th Wave, were able to crack the Top 3 this week.

THE TOP 3:

1. THE REVENANT

In its third week in wide release, the new Leonardo DiCaprio film, The Revenant, was able to jump up to the #1 spot with $16 million.  This is the first week since it opened that it's reached the top spot at the box office.  It has managed to bring in $119.2 million domestically and $223.5 million worldwide on a production budget of $135 million.

2. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In its sixth week in theaters, Star Wars: The Force Awakens managed to come back from its huge drop last week and go up one spot to #2, bringing in $14.1 million.  This brings its domestic total up to $879.1 million and its worldwide total up to $1.94 billion.  It's definitely on its way to being the only film to ever break $1 billion domestically and will most likely beat out Titanic for the #2 spot on the All-Time Worldwide Box Office chart.

3. RIDE ALONG 2

The follow-up to the 2014 buddy-cop film, Ride Along, took a big dip this weekend, dropping 64.7% to take the #3 spot with $12.4 million.  This puts it at $58.6 million domestically and $69.1 million worldwide on a $40 million production budget.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - The Revenant - $16,009,718

#2 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $14,078,648
