Movie Review: 1917 (Non-Spoiler)

In the art of film, sometimes you come across one that, simply put, takes your breath away.  A film that grabs onto you from the first frame and doesn’t let go, not for one single second, until the credits roll.  Films like these are rare, but when you come across one, it leaves an impression on your soul.  I discovered a film like that today in the form of Sam Mendes’’ new war film, 1917.

Movie Review: HACKSAW RIDGE (Review #2)

The true story of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield), the conscientious objector who, at the Battle of Okinawa, won the Medal of Honor for his incredible bravery and regard for his fellow soldiers. We see his upbringing and how this shaped his views, especially his religious view and anti-killing stance. We see Doss's trials and tribulations after enlisting in the US Army and trying to become a medic up until the struggle of Hacksaw Ridge.

Mel Gibson returns triumphantly to the director's chair, after a ten year hiatus, and gives us one of the most riveting war films we've had since the 90s, a great conceptual piece that isn't just about shooting stuff and has emphasis on emotion even in the biggest scenes, even though it gets occasionally carried away with unnecessary romanticism.

Why Haven't I Seen That?: APOCALYPSE NOW

Welcome to a new installment of WHY HAVEN'T I SEEN THAT?, where we talk about a must-see or iconic movie that we have never seen...until now. This week we take a look at Francis Ford Coppola's war epic... APOCALYPSE NOW.  Enjoy.

Apocalypse Now is not about Vietnam; It is Vietnam,” is something the writer-director Francis Ford Coppola has said about his War Epic, and I would honestly agree with him.

Going into this film, I had no clue what it was about and I did that purposefully. However, for the purpose of this film review I’ll give the premise of the film. Apocalypse Now is about Captain Willard who during the Vietnam War is sent to assassinate a renegade Colonel. The film is directed by Francis Ford Coppola and stars Martin Sheen as Captain Benjamin L. Willard, Marlon Brando as Colonel Walter E. Kurtz, and Robert Duvall as Lieutenant Colonel Bill Kilgore.

Here's the synopsis:

His handler, major Thomas Hardy does a final review of the mission's grim intel: infiltrate a mysterious villa on the Polish border and uncover its secrets. Colburn emerges donning a prototype suit, which can temporarily render its user invisible. As the plane's bay doors howl open Colburn begins to put on the skull-faced helmet when the plane is rocked by an anti-aircraft shell. Rapidly losing air pressure and altitude, now there's no question... This is a one-way mission.
