Short Film Spotlight: WEBCAM

Welcome back to another installment of SHORT FILM SPOTLIGHT, where we'll be reviewing a provocative and insightful film called WEBCAM. It was directed by Branden Kramer and edited by Lorraine Paul. This film explores the dangers of putting too much of our lives online.

The internet has its advantages and disadvantages. It can be a very dangerous place, and many people have webcams, which are a convenient way of keeping in touch with people. However, it is possible for people to hack into them and spy on you. Now, that gives me the creeps.

This film was able to scare me more in seven minutes than most full length horror flicks. It's about a girl named Julia who is having issues with her web cam. It starts out lighthearted with Julia telling her mom about her great new place. But, some creepy things start to happen. In one scene, Julia is in front of the webcam and in the top right corner a figure appears for a second, then disappears.

As a voyeur, I saw some of Julia's most private moments such as her taking a shower, being with her boyfriend and dancing in her underwear, which was very funny to watch.

I enjoyed the film because it scared me on a deep level, making me realize how easy it is for people to hurt you on the internet. The last scene, in particular, frightened me. It was a shot of Julia sleeping, then all of a sudden some menacing looking guy appears and closes her laptop. What happened to Julia? The possibilities are frightening.

WEBCAM brings to light the reality of webcam hacking. If people are able to hack into computers and wifi-enabled baby monitors, then they certainly can hack into webcams. People need to be aware of what they put online and always be observant. By watching this film, I became more aware of the dangers of the internet and putting too much of my own life online.

This film holds an important social message. Also, Jasmine Osborne did a great job in her role as Julia. I recommend that parents show this videos to their kids; so that they will become more aware of the dangers of the internet.

Lisa's Score: 9/10
