What's On Netflix?: UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT

Welcome back to another installment of WHAT'S ON NETFLIX?, where we pick a film or series currently playing on Netflix and review it for the fans. This week's selection is the sweet yet quirky comedy series....UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT.

This series has a hilarious and unique storyline, which is not surprising since Tina Fey is one of the creators of the series. The show tells the story of a young woman who escapes from being in a bunker for fifteen years as part of a doomsday cult and tries to build a life for herself in New York City.

Kimmy Schmidt, played by the adorable Ellen Kemper, has many misadventures in trying to find a job and a place to live.  She ends being a nanny to two kids, one of is a teenage girl who makes fun of Kimmy. She even gets set up on a date by her boss with hilarious consequences. But a highlight of Season 1 for me was Kimmy enrolling in a GED class. I found it inspirational that after all she had gone through, she was bettering her situation.

The second season gets even more interesting as Kimmy tries to help her new friends and hopefully find love. Her wealthy boss ends up divorcing her husband and starts depending on Kimmy even more. Kimmy even tries to help her gay roommate find love.

One of the funniest situations is when Tina Fey joins the cast as Kimmie's therapist. One minute she is a drunk who needs an über ride from Kimmy; the next she is the ultra serious therapist in her office. Sounds like someone may have two different personalities?!

I love the character of Kimmy Schmidt because I see some of myself in her. She is naïve, yet willing to try new things. Kimmy wants to fit in and it's difficult for her because of her past. I hope that in the third season she comes to grips with her past and her relationship with her mother.

This series was received well by the critics. It's first season has a 95% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes, while the second season received a remarkable 100% approval rating. The critics agree that this series is blessed with originality and that Ellen Kemper's performance is spot on.

Season 3 premieres on May 19, 2017 and I can't wait. If you are looking for a light hearted comedy that doesn't take life too seriously, then give this comedic gem a try.

Lisa's Scores:

Season 1: 9/10
Season 2: 9.5/10
