Welcome back to another installment of SHORT FILM SPOTLIGHT. This week, we take a look at the beautifully animated Legend of Zelda-inspired short film...MAJORA'S MASK: TERRIBLE FATE.
Majora's Mask: Terrible Fate is a fantastic and beautiful retelling of Skull Kid's origin leading into the classic Nintendo 64 game, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. It retains that dark tone hit by the game and manages to surpass it.
The very first thing that jumped out to me was just how amazing the animation was. It was flawless. This is the type of animation I would like to see done more, and if Ember Lab (the people who made this wonderful short film) decide to do a feature length film, no matter what it is, I'll be watching it. I was entranced by this film. It was so realistic in so many ways, and a large part of that is because they filmed in real locations for the most of the backgrounds (check out the behind-the-scenes video below). Even the music in this film, especially as he puts on the mask, is breathtaking. The only thing I would change is the length as I needed more.
With the rumored Zelda series for Netflix still up in the air, it seems to me that this would be the perfect way to go about it. There's so much beauty in animation like this that for a property such as The Legend of Zelda, I think it would benefit immensely more in this medium than in straight-up live action.
If you love the Zelda game series, or are just a fan of beautifully animated films, please give this a watch, and be sure to let me know what you thought. Would you be interested in a feature-length film or series based on Zelda in this style?
The Merc's Score: 9.5/10
