What's On Netflix?: ADULT WORLD

Welcome to another installment of WHAT'S ON NETFLIX?, where we pick out a film or series currently playing on Netflix and review it for the fans.  This week's choice is the indie comedy...ADULT WORLD.

As I perused Netflix, looking for this week's film to review, I came across Adult World.  I hadn't heard of it before, but it had an interesting cast (Emma Roberts, Evan Peters, and John Cusack), which caught my eye.  I had no clue what type of movie it would be or if it would be any good, but that's the fun part about writing these articles.

Adult World tells the story of recent college grad Amy, who thinks she's destined to become the world's next great poet.  But as her bills begin to pile up, she ends up taking a job at a local sex shop in order to make ends meet while she pursues a mentorship with her favorite poet of all time, the reclusive Rat Billings.

This is the sophomore outing for director Scott Coffey and the first feature film for writer Andrew Cochran.  I felt that the film flowed really well, not getting dragged down by unnecessary filler.  The main character, Amy (Emma Roberts), showed great development throughout, though her mentor, Rat Billings (John Cusack), did not.  But it worked for that character.

Speaking of characters, this film had a great main cast, each of them giving wonderful performances.  Let's start with Emma Roberts, who played the aspiring poet, Amy.  This is one of my favorite roles from Ms. Roberts, a nice departure from the "bitchy" roles she tends to play (AHS: CovenScream Queens).  You actually care about her character and want to see her succeed.  Next is the very talented Even Peters as Alex, the manager of the sex shop.  Anytime I see his name attached to a project, I get excited for it, because Peters always brings a great performance to his roles, and this is no different.

The other main character in this film is Rat Billings, played by John Cusack.  This is, by far, one of his best roles that I have ever seen, and proves that he still has what it takes to make it in this business.  Another notable performance was given by Armando Riesco, who plays Rubia, Adult World customer and friend of Alex.  His interactions with Emma Roberts were some of the best parts of this film, causing Rubia to become a stand out character.

Adult World isn't your typical comedy.  It's got a drier, more ironic type of humor, so don't expect to be gut-laughing for an hour and a half.  It's much more subtle than that.  However, it is very enjoyable and is filled with great performances.  So, if you've got some time, I definitely recommend giving this one a watch.

The Merc's Score: 7.5/10
