WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Jason Bourne' Dominates The Box Office, While 'Star Trek' Slips In Second Weekend

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of July 29-31 were Jason Bourne, Star Trek Beyond, Bad Moms.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

It was nice to see the new Bourne film succeed with the return of Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass.  Hopefully this will spur a new set of Damon-led films, possibly even one with both him and Jeremy Renner, who starred in The Bourne Legecy.  But the biggest standout to me was the new comedy Bad Moms, which crushed its production budget in its opening weekend.  And as someone who watched the film, it definitely deserved it.

THE TOP 3:

1. JASON BOURNE

Matt Damon returns to one of his most famous roles in the fifth film in the Bourne franchise, Jason Bourne.  The new film managed to bring in the second highest opening for a Bourne film, $59.2 million, with the highest being the last Damon installment, The Bourne Ultimatum, which made $69.2 million back in 2007.  Combined with the foreign grosses, Jason Bourne raked in a worldwide total of $110 million on a $120 million production budget, which is a great opening weekend for this film.

2. STAR TREK BEYOND

The third installment in the rebooted Star Trek franchise, Star Trek Beyond, slipped down one spot in its second weekend, bringing in $24.8 million.  This puts its domestic total at $106.5 million, with a worldwide total of $162.8 million on a $185 million production budget.

3. BAD MOMS

The new R-rated comedy, Bad Moms, hit theaters this weekend with a great opening of $23.8 million.  It did have a small opening overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $25.2 million on a $20 million production budget.  I wouldn't be surprised if they green light a sequel after this successful opening weekend.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - Jason Bourne - $59,215,365

#2 - Star Trek Beyond - $24,754,339

#3 - Bad Moms - $23,817,340

#4 - The Secret Life Of Pets - $18,915,140

#5 - Ice Age: Collision Course - $10,988,839

#6 - Lights Out - $10,803,331

#7 - Ghostbusters - $10,125,735

#8 - Nerve - $9,445,456

#9 - Finding Dory - $4,322,747

#10 - The Legend Of Tarzan - $2,467,018
