Welcome to another installment of RETRO REVIEW where we take a look at films made before the year 2000. Today we review the 1985 horror film, FRIGHT NIGHT. Enjoy!
It's obvious from my previous posts that I'm obsessed with movies from the 1980's. My pick for this week is Fright Night, which came out in 1985. My childhood best friend and I would watch this movie over and over. In fact, I just watched it again the other day. The story has lust, vampires and teenage angst, what more can you ask for.
It follows teenager Charley Brewster, who is obsessed with horror movies, who tries to go all the way with his girlfriend Amy, played by Amanda Bearse. They get into a fight and she leaves that night. A mysterious and gorgeous man moves next door to Charley and his mother, and after some unusual events, Charley concludes that his charming new neighbor, Jerry Dandrige, played by Chris Sarandon, is a creature of the night.
His girlfriend and best friend think he's lost his mind and they secure the help of Peter Vincent, the star of Charley's favorite show 'Fight Night' to help him come to his senses. However, it's concluded that Jerry Dandrige is a vampire after all and that's when the fun begins.
My favorite scene of the movie is in the night club with Jerry and Amy. It starts with her and Charley running away. But, Amy is drawn to the charming vampire and falls under his spell. The chemistry between Bearse and Sarandon in this scene is alluring to the say the least. What teenage girl wouldn't be drawn by his good looks and charming smile?
All the performances were excellent, but Bearse's stands out to me the most. When I watched Married with Children, I immediately recognized her as Marcy Rhodes/Darcy, the Bundy's neighbor. She's one of the reasons I loved that show and still watch reruns of it today.
I watched the 2011 remake and thought it was fun to watch, but was nothing compared to the original. Fright Night is an oldie but definitely a goodie, so if you haven't seen it yet, go do so right now.
