WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Apocalypse' Reigns Supreme Over This Week's Box Office

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of May 27-29 were X-Men: Apocalypse, Alice Through The Looking Glass, and The Angry Birds Movie.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

To be honest, I was a bit shocked that Captain America: Civil War dropped out of the Top 3, but it was nice to see the two new films actually take the top, which happens less often than not.  And with such mixed reviews, it's no surprise that X-Men: Apocalypse didn't perform as well as expected.

THE TOP 3:

1. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

Bryan Singer's newest installment in the X-Men franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse, opened this weekend, bringing in $65.3 million domestically.  Combined with an early international opening, the film managed to wrangle in a worldwide total of $251.1 million on a $178 million production budget.

2. ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

Disney's Alice In Wonderland sequel, Alice Through The Looking Glass, also opened this week, although to disappointing results.  Bringing in $27 million domestically, the film underperformed by around $20 million from early estimates.  This lackluster debut is likely due to the very poor early critic reviews and a general lack of interest in the property.  It did manage to bringing in $65 million in foreign grosses for a worldwide total of $92 million on a hefty $170 million production budget.

3. THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE

The brand new, mobile game-inspired animated film, The Angry Birds Movie, hit theaters last weekend, shockingly beating out Marvel's Captain America: Civil War for the top spot.  But that only lasted one week as it has already dropped down to the #3 spot in its second weekend.  The film brought in another $18.8 million for a domestic total of $72.3 million and a worldwide total of $229.5 million on a modest $73 million production budget.
