Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results. The TOP 3 films for the weekend of May 20-22 were The Angry Birds Movie, Captain America: Civil War, and Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising.
Let's take a look at this week's box office results:
WHAT STANDS OUT?
The biggest stand out to me is The Angry Birds Movie booting Captain America: Civil War from the top spot. I figured this film would do well, but didn't think it would top the Marvel Money Machine. We also saw The Jungle Book hold onto a spot in the Top 5, with a mere drop of only 36.1%. This film is holding steady and just may cross the $1 billion mark by the end of its run.
THE TOP 3:
1. THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE
The brand new, mobile game-inspired animated film, The Angry Birds Movie, hit theaters this weekend and shockingly beat out Marvel's Captain America: Civil War for the top spot. The film brought in $38.2 million domestically, but more impressively managed to rake in $150.1 million worldwide on a modest $73 million production budget. This film is definitely a surprise hit and I foresee a sequel in its future.
2. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR
Marvel Studio's newest hit, and the third installment of the Captain America series, Captain America: Civil War, was knocked down to the #2 spot this week, bringing in $32.9 million, a drop of 54.7%. This brings its domestic total up to $347.2 million and its worldwide total to an outstanding $1.054 billion, making it the fourth MCU film to cross the $1 billion mark, joining Avengers, Avengers: Age of Ultron, and Iron Man 3.
3. NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING
The sequel to the 2014 comedy, Neighbors, also hit theaters this weekend, bringing in less than half what its predecessor made opening weekend. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising managed $21.8 million domestically and $51.4 million worldwide on a modest $35 million. Luckily, the critic reviews have been somewhat favorable, so perhaps we still may see a Neighbors 3 in the future.
TOP 10 RUNDOWN:
#1 - The Angry Birds Movie - $38,155,177
#2 - Captain America: Civil War - $32,939,739
#3 - Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising - $21,760,405
