I don't know about you, but my excitement for this movie just went from about a 4/10 to a 10/10. The first few promotional images of Apocalypse filled us with some doubt, including everything ranging from how Bryan Singer will handle the storyline, to Apocalypse's character design. Despite the fact that I loved, loved, LOVED the last two X-Men movies, I haven't been able to get psyched for this like I have the other upcoming superhero films of 2016. In fact I don't even think I watched the first trailer. All of that changed when this beast of a trailer surprisingly dropped this morning.
Check out the trailer below:
The first part of the trailer sets up the story, Charles and Mystique awaiting the inevitable war, the origin of Apocalypse and the forming of his four horsemen, consisting of Angel, Storm, Psylocke and one of my favorite comic book villains of recent years, Magneto. The atmospheric music is fantastic and it really sets up a tone that says "dark stuff is about to go down, but you are gonna have so much fun watching it". We get some great destruction and menacing dialogue from Apocalypse, and I'm confident that Oscar Isaac will knock it out of the park.
My only minor issue with this trailer is the fact that it looks like Mystique is going to once again be the main character. Her origin was told brilliantly in First Class and she served the plot well in Days of Future Past, but I don't think she's an interesting enough character to continually be at the forefront. It's beginning to feel like they're just trying to bring in that Jennifer Lawrence box office revenue.
Professor Xavier gets taken by Apocalypse, so it's up to Mystique and Nicholas Hoult's Beast, to gather a new generation of X-Men to take the fight to Apocalypse, including young versions of Jean Grey, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, and Evan Peters' awesome rendition of Quicksilver will also return, along with Havok.
I'd just like to pause this review for a moment to talk about HOW AWESOME CYCLOPS LOOKS IN THIS MOVIE. THE ANSWER IS VERY AWESOME. It's great to see him exercise his powers with today's visual effects, and he looks like total badass. Not to mention is he PERFECTLY cast with the immensely talented Tye Sheridan playing the part, who is one of my favorite young actors right now. Cyclops and his fight with Storm were definitely a highlight of the trailer for me.
The second half of the trailer is all-out, balls to the wall superhero action, and it looks like a lot of fun. The visuals are so vibrant and colorful, and the effects look absolutely top notch. Olivia Munn's Psylocke looks like a great new villain, and at this point I'm struggling to think of how the X-Men are going to win this one.
This trailer gave me exactly what I wanted from a new X-Men movie, and I went from not interested to JUST TAKE MY GODDAMN MONEY NOW. There is also an awesome 'kinda surprise' in the final shot of the trailer that made me shout with glee! If you haven't seen it, just watch it and enjoy it. Take note, that's how you cut a goddamn trailer, giving away just enough, but not too much.
