What's On Netflix: VISIONS

While on the hunt for a horror movie the other night, I came across this recent release.  It had Isla Fisher and Jim Parsons, which definitely piqued my interest.  It had an interesting premise, so I figured I'd give it a shot.

Visions follows Eveleigh Maddox, who, after a terrible car crash, moves to a vineyard in the middle of nowhere with her husband.  She soon begins having terrifying supernatural visions, which causes her to question her sanity while trying not to succumb to this evil surrounding her family.

This is director Kevin Greutert fourth trip to the world of feature-length horror, following such films as Saw VI, Saw: The Final Chapter, and Jessabelle.  This film is more in line with his most recent film, Jessabelle, then either of the Saw films, being more of a supernatural thriller as opposed to a gore fest.

I was surprised to see Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers, Now You See Me) and Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory) in a film like this, seeing as both are known mainly for their comedic roles.  I enjoyed Isla's performance, as she steered away from comedy and was able to stay serious throughout.  Jim Parson, however, who played Eveleigh's physician, Dr. Mathison, slightly took me out of the film at first, but as his scenes went on, it was clear that this character was nothing like his Big Bang Theory character, and that allowed me to believe in his performance more.  You also get to see Anson Mount (Hell On Wheels) as Eveleigh's husband David, Gillian Jacobs (Community) as Eveleigh's new friend Sadie, and Joanna Cassidy (Blade Runner) as wine critic Helena.

The film had an interesting premise, which is why I watched it in the first place, but it was the twist ending that really intrigued me.  It was something I hadn't seen done in quite this way and definitely made me enjoy it a bit more.  If you're looking for late night horror flick to check out, I recommend giving this one a shot.

The Merc's Score: 7/10
