Movie Review: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - ROGUE NATION

Ethan Hunt is back and better than ever in the newest installment of the highly popular Mission: Impossible series, Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation.  I have been enjoying these films for the last almost 20 years, and I've grown to love this franchise more and more after each turn.

One of the things I love the most about these movies is that they know how to continue a story from one film to the next, giving a sense of interconnectedness throughout the series.  The action is always superb, and the acting talent is top notch.  This is the role Tom Cruise was born to play.

This film, the fifth in the series, was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who is no stranger to working with Tom Cruise.  He wrote and directed the 2012 action film, Jack Reacher, and also wrote 2008's Valkyrie and 2014's Edge of Tomorrow.  His directing style is perfectly suited for these types of high octane action films, which is why I'm excited that he'll returning to write and direct the next Mission: Impossible film.

Tom Cruise was great as super spy, IMF agent Ethan Hunt, as he always is.  This is my favorite character of his, and he plays the part perfectly.  In this installment, we see some familiar faces return such as Jeremy Renner as William Brandt, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, and Ving Rhames as the always cool and charismatic Luther Stickell.  Their chemistry as a team is brilliant, and I hope to see them all return for part six.

As I said before, I love the fast-paced, high octane action of these films, but the one thing I miss that they did so well in the original is the espionage, the delicate spycraft that made the first film so enchanting.  But as time passes, the audience needs more to satisfy their hunger, and with that comes more ramped up action and bigger stakes.

This was, by far, my favorite of the franchise thus far, and I can't wait to see what Cruise and McQuarrie bring to next film.  If you haven't seen it, I highly recommend checking it out.

The Merc's Score: 8.5/10
