WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Star Wars' Breaks Records With Enormous OpeningWeekend

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, formerly BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of December 18-20 were Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip, and Sisters.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

After initial estimates of $200+ million increased to $215+ million and then $238 million, it was definitely a shock to see it fly past all of those to bring in almost $250 million, breaking several box office records, including largest domestic opening and largest worldwide opening.

It was impressive to see the other wide-release newcomers, Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip and Sisters, do as well as they did.  We also saw two limited-release films make it into the Top 10 with Dilwale and Bajirao Mastani.

THE TOP 3:

1. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

This was a monster weekend for the newest installment in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, destroying the box office with a staggering $247.9 million.  This breaks the all-time opening weekend record of $208.8 million, previously held by Jurassic World.  It also brought in an impressive $281 million in foreign grosses for a worldwide total of $528.9 million, again breaking the previous record of $524.9 million held by Jurassic World.  Star Wars: The Force Awakens is well on its way to taking the top spot of all-time.

2. ALVIN & THE CHIPMUNKS: THE ROAD CHIP

The fourth installment in this franchise managed to snag the #2 spot, making $14.3 million.  This is a 38.5% drop from the previous film, and continues the downward trajectory of this series.  Hopefully, it'll be able to hold on next week, being one of the few kids movies in theaters.

3. SISTERS

Sisters, the new comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, managed to bring in a respectable $13.9 million domestically and $15.7 million worldwide on a $30 million production budget.  I fear it will have a hard time holding on with the new Will Ferrell/Mark Wahlberg comedy, Daddy's Home, hitting theaters this coming weekend.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $247,966,675

#2 - Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip - $14,287,159

#3 - Sisters - $13,922,855

#4 - The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt. 2 - $5,892,683
