Family Movie Night: THE GOONIES

Welcome to a new installment of FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT, where we give our recommendation on a family-friendly movie to enjoy. This week I'll be reviewing the wonderful '80s classic, THE GOONIES! If you grew up in the '80's then you most likely watched this film over and over. It was directed by Richard Donner and Chris Columbus wrote the screenplay. Steven Speilberg was one of the producers and the story was his idea.

I chose this film to review for family movie night because it teaches values that are important to our society as a whole, such as teamwork and perseverance. The characters in the story band together to save their homes from being demolished and end up going on the adventure of their lives!

As a child I watched this film and wanted to be Andy, played by Kerri Green, who later appeared in another favorite of mine, LUCAS. Another favorite cast member of mine was Corey Feldman. Josh Brolin and Sean Astin also starred in this film, both of whom are still acting today. I loved this cast of misfits because they reminded me of my own group of friends growing up.

My favorite scene is when the group is looking through an attic and find an old map! Where does the map lead too? Well, it leads to the treasure of a pirate called One-Eyed Willy!!! However, there is a family of criminals who also want the treasure!! I wonder who'll end up finding it...

I think this film is engaging and the chemistry between the cast is great. Watching them onscreen together was a fun experience because of the special effects and high energy antics. It was also very fast paced and so much was happening at once, with the kids running through tunnels and trying to avoid booby traps. But, it just made the film that much better for me as an audience member.

Thirty years later this film still holds a special place in my heart because it taught me the value of friendship and never giving up. Growing up is so confusing; but it's much easier with a great group of friends! This film also conveyed important life values such as working together and the value of friendship.

This film did fairly well at the box office and has a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Most reviewers thought the movie was enjoyable, but they thought it was aimed more at teens and children.

THE GOONIES  is a great film that the entire family can watch together. If you and your loved ones haven't had the opportunity to enjoy this fantastic film, then I suggest you do so as soon as possible. Remember, "GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE!"

Lisa's Score: 9/10
