Comedy Corner: HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN TEN DAYS

Welcome to another installment of COMEDY CORNER, where we review the movies that make the world laugh, or those that just try to.  This week we'll be reviewing a hilariously disastrous romantic comedy, HOW TO LOSE A GUY IN TEN DAYS

If you read my last review, then you'll know how much I adore romantic comedies; clichés and all. This movie stars Kate Hudson as an up and coming writer for a popular beauty magazine called Composure and Matthew McConaughey as a smooth talking advertisement executive. The premise of the film is that Andi (Hudson) has to do all the things guys hate and write an article about it. Ben Barry (McConaughey) has a bet with his co-workers that he can make any woman fall in love with him within ten days. His co-workers are setting him up to fail because they want the coveted diamond ad campaign for themselves. I was floored when I found out about the bet's twist at the end.

Andi Anderson (cute name!) does everything she can to drive Ben away for the sake of her article. Some of the things she does are pretty awful. They are both New York Nicks fans, so Andi says she has tickets. But, they ended up being for a Celine Dion concert. The look on Ben's face is priceless when he realizes what the tickets are for.  Then she interrupts his Guys Night and they almost break up. Ben makes up with her for the sake of winning the bet.

I love this film because it shows all the things women shouldn't do in dating; such as calling seven times a day, interrupting their Guys Night, and making fun of their sexual member.  This film takes a humorous look at dating and relationships, especially with them seeing a therapist after only three days of dating. The therapist was actually not a real therapist, it was Andi's friend Michelle pretending to be one. I must say that the Michelle character brings a great vulnerability to the film and Kathryn Hahn is a fantastic actress.

Despite everything Andi does to drive Ben away; they seem to connect after a visit to his family's home for the weekend. They both have feelings for each other; but also want to succeed in their prospective careers.

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days has a score of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. The reviewers thought Hudson and McConaughey were charming; but that the script was predictable. It received mostly mixed reviews from critics. But, the chemistry between Hudson and McConaughey was undeniable.

Despite the mixed reviews, this was a great movie. The casting was great and I thought the plot was funny and relatable. I know most women will watch it for the simple fact that Matthew McConaughey is in it.

Lisa's Score: 8.5/10
