25 Days of Christmas: HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS (2000)

Welcome to Day 22 of our 25 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS series, where we will be taking a look at holiday classics each day in the lead up to Christmas. Today, we'll be taking a look at Ron Howard's hidden gem...HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS.

Adapted from the children's cartoon and the famous Dr. Seuss book, How The Grinch Stole Christmas revolves around a creature simply referred to as "The Grinch" (played by Jim Carrey). The Grinch was a creature unlike any other who was dropped off in a city referred to as Who-Ville. Who-Ville is the city in which the people, known as Who, live, and they worship Christmas. But the Who's have banished the Grinch into the mountains, due to him being different than everyone else. After a young Who girl named Cindy Lou-Who, attempts to make the Grinch rekindle with the Who's, they embarrass the Grinch for the last time. And he decides that the way he can get revenge on all of the Who's is by stealing Christmas.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas is not necessarily a wonderful film by any means, but it is a great viewing at Christmas time. Despite it lacking cinematic promise, there are still some strengths that are rather impressive. The first being Jim Carrey's performance as the Grinch. Not only how he acts as the Grinch, but being in the prosthetic costume he had to wear for hours on end during shooting. But Carrey also is rather energetic, he brings all his usual comedic enthusiasm to the screen and makes for quite a memorable performance. Carrey is both a bit quirky, making him enjoyable for the kids to enjoy, but also rather hilarious as well for the adults to enjoy.

Another strong aspect that this film does is the overall production. Not only is the Grinch's costume and makeup done extremely well but so is every other characters. The Who's have always been designed as over the top creatures with wacky hair styles, and dysfunctional outfits. And director Ron Howard perfectly merges Seuss' vision into his own. Recreating the childhood world of Who-Ville near perfectly, looking like a page out of a Seuss book.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas is a wacky, over the top Christmas movie for everyone to enjoy. With an illustrious performance from Jim Carrey, and some gorgeous visuals to look at in terms of the production and costume design. Ron Howard re-creates a rather nostalgic Christmas world for all ages to take a bite out of.

Joshua's Score: 8/10
