31 Days of Horror: POLTERGEIST (1982)

Welcome horror fans to Day 28 of the 31 DAYS OF HORROR! We are back with another film on our lead up to Halloween, and today we'll be reviewing a classic in the genre, POLTERGEIST.

Poltergeist starts out with an average American family, The Freelings. Unexplained events start happening such as objects moving around by themselves. Whatever has taken over their happy home ends up attaching itself to Carol Ann, their youngest daughter. Then she ends up missing.

Poltergeist is a great horror film because it actually scared me. I've watched horror films where the gore factor is high but didn't really scare or frighten me. I found Poltergeist very creepy. It wasn't a slasher film like Friday the 13th or Halloween, but still creeped me out and caused me to look at my television differently. The great thing about this film was that it wasn't a tangible monster like in the other two mentioned, but instead something unseen.

The acting in this was great, and very realistic to me. I actually cared for the characters. Craig T. Nelson and JoBeth Williams play the roles of the doting parents well. Dominique Dunne, Oliver Robins and Heather O' Rourke played the roles of the children wonderfully. These types of films always seem like hard movies to star in as a child actor, but they did great.

There are three scenes that made this film memorable to me. The first is when Carol Ann looks into the television and says "they're here". When I first saw this scene, I couldn't help but wonder what was in the television. Who were "they"? The second scene is when Carol Ann is swept away into the closet and no one can find her. I felt afraid for Carol Ann and wondered where the invisible force had taken her. And finally, the third scene is when Diane and Carol Ann are rescued and reunited with their family. I was relieved when they were rescued; but felt that the story wasn't over.

Poltergeist is definitely a horror classic, that some even believe to be cursed.  So if you're looking for something this Halloween season with great acting and superb creepiness, give this one a watch.

Lisa's Score: 8/10
