WEEKEND ROUNDUP: Tom Hanks Dominates The Box Office With New Film 'Sully'; 'The Disappointments Room' Proves To Be A Disappointment

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of September 9-11 were Sully, When The Bough Breaks, and Don't Breathe.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

This week there were three things that really stood out to me.  The first was that When The Bough Breaks made it into the Top 3.  I didn't think this film looked very good from the trailers, and according to the critics, I was right.  The second was that the new animated film The Wild Life barely hit the Top 5.  Animated films with animals tend to do better, but I guess this is just one of those that will come and go without many people remembering.  And finally, The Disappointments Room, which opened to over 1,500 screens, only managed to bring in $1.4 million, putting it at #17 on the list.  In a year filled with great horror films, it was just a matter of time before we got a stinker, and it seems like this is it.

THE TOP 3:

1. SULLY

Tom Hanks' newest film, Sully, hit theaters this weekend and managed to score the top spot at the box office, bringing in $35 million.  Combined with a foreign gross of $10.5 million, Sully grabbed a worldwide total of $45.5 million on a $60 million production budget.

2. WHEN THE BOUGH BREAKS

The new thriller from Screen Gems, When The Bough Breaks, opened this weekend and managed to do very pretty well, bringing in a total of $14.2 million on only a $10 million production budget.  However, with a Rotten Tomatoes score currently sitting at 0% (with an average rating of 3.2/10), you can expect a significant drop next week.

3. DON'T BREATHE

The latest horror film from the director of the Evil Dead remake, Fede Alvarez, managed to secure a spot in the Top 3 again this week, bringing in an impressive $8.3 million.  This puts its domestic total at $66.9 million, with a worldwide total of $87.7 million on a $9.9 million production budget.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - Sully - $35,028,301
