WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'The Magnificent Seven' Leads A Lackluster Weekend, With 'Storks' Right Behind

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of September 23-25 were The Magnificent Seven, Storks, and Sully.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

This week gave a pretty poor showing at the box office with the Top 12 films combined not even breaking $100 million.  But even with such low turnout, the two new films this week, The Magnificent Seven and Storks, managed to grab the top two spots respectively.  We also saw the new Tom Hanks film, Sully, break $125 million worldwide, more than doubling its production budget.

THE TOP 3:

1. THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN

In a somewhat lackluster opening, Antoine Fuqua's latest film, a remake of The Magnificent Seven, hit theaters with a domestic total of $34.7 million, falling short of original expectations.  Combined with its foreign grosses, TM7 brought in a worldwide total of $56 million on a moderate production budget of $90 million.

2. STORKS

In another lackluster opening, the new animated film, Storks, managed to only bring in $21.3 million.  Combined with a foreign gross of $18.6 million, the film took in a worldwide total of $39.9 million on a $70 million production budget.  This may have been due to its poor marketing campaign, weak trailers, or just because it's September.  But hopefully the good word of mouth will cause a rise at the box office in coming weeks.

3. SULLY

Tom Hanks' newest film, Sully, fell a couple spots this week, but still managed to land in the Top 3, bringing in $13.5 million, a drop of only 37.5% from last weekend.  This puts its domestic total at $92.1 million, with a worldwide total of $127.1 million on a $60 million production budget.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - The Magnificent Seven - $34,703,397

#2 - Storks - $21,311,407

#3 - Sully - $13,537,270
