WEEKEND ROUNDUP: New Horror Film 'Don't Breathe' Scares Up A Win At The Box Office, While 'Mechanic: Resurrection' Fails To Rev Engines


Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of August 26-28 were Don't Breathe, Suicide Squad, and Kubo And The Two Strings.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:


WHAT STANDS OUT?

The biggest stand out this week is the new Fede Alvarez horror film, which more than doubled the #2 film this week, and almost tripled its production budget.  With all the great reviews, expect to this film do great business over the next few weeks.  We also saw a very close race for the films between the 3rd spot and the 7th spot, with less than $1 million separating them all.


THE TOP 3:


1. DON'T BREATHE


The latest horror film from the director of the Evil Dead remake, Fede Alvarez, hit theaters this weekend and managed to surpass all the competition, bringing in an impressive $26.4 million.  Combined with a small foreign opening, Don't Breathe brought in a worldwide total of $28.4 million on a $9.9 million production budget.


2. SUICIDE SQUAD


DC's latest film, Suicide Squad, took a bit of a slight dip this week, dropping down to the #2 spot with $12.2 million.  This gives it a domestic total of $283 million and an impressive 3 1/2 week worldwide total of $636.7 million on a $175 million production budget.


3. KUBO AND THE TWO STRINGS


The latest Laika Animation film, Kubo and the Two Strings, moved up to the #3 spot this week, bringing in $7.8 million, a drop of only 41.3% from its opening weekend.  This puts it at a domestic total of $24.9 million and a worldwide total of $27.5 million on a hefty $60 million production budget.
