WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Secret Life Of Pets' Sneaks Past 'Ghostbusters' To Take Top Spot In Second Weekend

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of July 15-17 were The Secret Life of Pets, Ghostbusters (2016), and The Legend of Tarzan.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

The biggest standout to me was the new rebooted Ghostbusters film, which opened this weekend. The reason for this is because even though it has been getting trashed ever since the first trailer, the positive reviews and word-of-mouth helped get it to a decent opening gross, and hopefully, it'll continue to hang on and make its budget back.

One other thing that stood out this week was Finding Dory.  The latest film from animation juggernaut Pixar officially became the highest domestic grossing animated film of all time with $445.7 million.  Worldwide it has brought in an impressive $721.9 million in less than five weeks.

THE TOP 3:

1. THE SECRET LIFE OF PETS

The newest animated film from the makers of Despicable MeThe Secret Life of Pets, hit theaters last weekend, and completely blew away the competition.  This week, it managed to do it again, beating out the new Ghostbusters reboot, with $50.8 million.  This puts its domestic total at $203.4 million, with a worldwide total of $254.3 million on a $75 million production budget.  This also marks the fifth straight weekend that an animated film has been #1, with Finding Dory taking it for the three weeks prior.

2. GHOSTBUSTERS (2016)

The Paul Feig-directed Ghostbusters reboot finally hit theaters this weekend, and, unfortunately, didn't quite do as well as hoped, due mostly to the amount of negativity spawning from the horrible trailers.  But the positive reviews, certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and decent word-of-mouth helped prevent it from completely bombing as Ghostbusters managed to bring in $46 million domestically and $64.1 million worldwide on a $144 million production budget.

3. THE LEGEND OF TARZAN

The newest take on the Tarzan story, The Legend of Tarzan, managed to hang on to a spot in the Top 3 again this week, pulling in $11.4 million, a drop of only 45.5%.  This puts its domestic total at $103.4 million and its worldwide total at $195.1 million on a $180 million production budget.  As of week three, it has finally hit its production budget, but whether or not it'll make a profit is yet to be seen.
