Retro Review: ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING (1987)

Welcome to another installment of RETRO REVIEW, Where we take a look at films made before the year 2000. Today we review the 1987 comedy...ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING. ENJOY!!!

This movie came out in 1987, when I was seven years old, and is one that I've watched over and over again since. This comedy explores teenage angst with a bittersweet twist. Who remembers their first teenage crush? We all do and that is one of the reasons I love this movie.

Our protagonist Chris Parker, played by the lovely Elisabeth Shue, has her boyfriend cancel their dream date. She ends up babysitting for the Anderson's, which is not on the top of her list of things to do.  The Anderson's teenage son Brad has a major crush on her, and his younger sister, Sarah, teases him about it relentlessly. Sarah is also obsessed with Thor. Chris is expecting to have an evening of homework and television, however, that all changes when her best friend Brenda calls. She ran away from home, went to the city, and now needs a ride home. Chris ends up taking Brad, Sarah and Daryl on an adventure to rescue Brenda.

One of my favorite scenes is at the beginning of the movie where Elisabeth Shue is getting ready for her date and lip syncing to the song "Then He Kissed Me". It was cute how they showed an excited teenage girl getting ready for her dream date.  Another standout scene in the film was Brenda losing her glasses and mistaking a sewer rat for a kitten. It was hilarious because after Brenda realized her mistake; she started running and screaming.

This foursome goes through many misadventures from being hijacked to surviving a gang fight on the subway. One of my favorite lines is "Don't f**k with the babysitter", because the line before that was "Dont f**k with the Lords of Hell". This was an exchange between Chris and one of the gang leaders. It showed Chris's frustration with the situation perfectly. The restaurant scene was also funny when Chris found her boyfriend with another girl. Brad ended up telling the guy off and Daryl punched him in the face.

They finally make it home safe with Brenda in tow, when Dan drives up the driveway in his jeep. Dan had helped them get their car back on the way and had brought Sarah's skate back that she thought was lost. He obviously came back for another reason. Where Chris's boyfriend failed; Dan was able to show her there were other options out there. The last scene was Dan and Chris kissing with "Then He Kissed Me" playing in the background.

Adventures In Babysitting is a fun movie for all ages to watch. I enjoyed watching Elisabeth Shue in this role, and I would definitely recommend it if you haven't seen it.

Lisa's Score: 8/10
