Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results. The TOP 3 films for the weekend of June 3-5 were Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out Of The Shadows, X-Men: Apocalypse, and Me Before You.
Let's take a look at this week's box office results:
WHAT STANDS OUT?
It was no surprise that TMNT 2 took the top spot, but what shocked me was that Me Before You grabbed the #3 spot while the new comedy, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping couldn't even crack the Top 5, landing at #8 on its opening weekend. We also saw Zootopia become the second film in 2016 to break the $1 billion mark.
THE TOP 3:
1. TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES: OUT OF THE SHADOWS
The newest installment of the rebooted Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, Out Of The Shadows, hit theaters this weekend with a soft opening, bringing in only $35.3 million, which is barely over half of what it's predecessor opened with ($65.6 million). Combined with the weekend's foreign grosses, the film managed to scrape up a worldwide total of $68.3 million on a $135 million production budget.
2. X-MEN: APOCALYPSE
Bryan Singer's newest installment in the X-Men franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse, took quite a hit this weekend, dropping 65.3% to bring in $22.8 million. This puts the film's domestic total at $117 million, with a worldwide total of $401.4 million on a $178 million production budget.
3. ME BEFORE YOU
The new Emilia Clark romantic drama, Me Before You, opened strong this weekend with $18.7 million. Combined with its foreign grosses (which weren't much), the film brought in a worldwide total of $26.9 million on a low $20 million production budget. I'd say this film did very well considering the competition it had this weekend.
