Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results. The TOP 3 films for the weekend of April 1-3 were Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zootopia, and My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2.
Let's take a look at this week's box office results:
WHAT STANDS OUT?
Batman v Superman took a pretty big nose dive this weekend, but still managed to beat Man of Steel's worldwide box office. WB has came out and said that they are not concerned with this drop and are moving forward as planned, which is great to hear.
It was also a bit of a surprise to see My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 hand on to a spot in the Top 3. I figured one of the new releases would have taken that spot, but apparently people are getting a little tired of all the faith-based films out right now, with God's Not Dead 2 marking the 4th one released in the last two months including Risen, The Young Messiah, and Miracles From Heaven.
THE TOP 3:
1. BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
DC's second installment in their brand new shared cinematic universe, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, took a bit of a hit this weekend, dropping 69.1 % to bring in $51.3 million domestically. This puts the film at a domestic total of $260.4 million and a whopping $682.9 million worldwide, beating its predecessor's (Man of Steel) final worldwide total of $668 million in just 10 days.
2. ZOOTOPIA
Disney Animation's newest film, Zootopia, managed hand on to the #2 spot again during its fifth weekend, dropping only 19.6% to bring in a solid $19.3 million. This puts its domestic total at $275.3 million and its worldwide total at an impressive $787 million, and with no other animated films coming out for a few weeks, Zootopia is sure to continue to rise, hitting high numbers by the end of it's run, possibly even crossing the $1 billion mark.
3. MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING 2
The sequel to the 2002 rom-com, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, held on to the #3 spot in its second weekend, dropping only 37.2% to bring in $11.2 million. This puts its domestic total at $36.6 million and its worldwide total at $55 million on an $18 million production budget.
