The first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated Star Wars spinoff film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, has officially dropped. Check it out:
This teaser trailer was an amazing introduction to this this brand new story and the characters involved. Felicity Jones plays Jyn Erso, a member of the rebel alliance who is sent on a mission to steal the plans to the original Death Star, the event that kicked off this iconic franchise.
As I watched this teaser, I felt, right away, that this film would fit perfectly into the Star Wars universe. The music, the tone, the action...it all felt like Star Wars, which is exactly what this film needs. Casual audience members need to be able to tell right away that this is part of that world, and this trailer did the job.
We got a lot of great appearances in this trailer, including AT-AT walkers, Shadowtroopers, the Death Star, and even Mon Mothma, who was cast perfectly. This actress looks just like the Mon Mothma from Return of the Jedi. We also saw a grey-haired man (played by Ben Mendelsohn) in Imperial garb who looks quite a bit like Grand Mof Tarkin. There are a few differences between this character and Tarkin from A New Hope, including his rank insignia and uniform, however, it is possible that he receives a promotion between this film and Episode IV.
One of the things that seems to have gotten the Internet up in a roar about this film is that the lead is, yet again, a female. Personally, I thing this is a great decision by Disney and Lucasfilm, as females aren't showcased as badass warriors nearly enough in film. They did a great job with Rey in The Force Awakens and it's nice to see them take this route once again.
I'm very excited for these stand-alone anthology films and starting off with this story is definitely the right move for Disney and Lucasfilm.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will hit theaters on December 16, 2016.
So excited!
