WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Ride Along 2' Guns Past 'Star Wars' For The Top Spot

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of January 15-17 were Ride Along 2, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and The Revenant.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

The biggest thing that stands out to me this week is another large drop for Star Wars, losing dominance over the box office and landing in the #3 spot.  Also seeing The Revenant only drop 20% was pretty impressive.  Lastly, The Hateful Eight took another significant drop, going all the way down to the #10 spot this week.

THE TOP 3:

1. RIDE ALONG 2

The follow-up to the 2014 buddy-cop film, Ride Along, hit theaters this weekend, taking the top spot with $35.3 million domestically and $38 million worldwide on a $40 million production budget.  That pits three comedies in the Top 10 this week.

2. THE REVENANT

In its second week in wide release, the new Leonardo DiCaprio film, The Revenant, was able to hold on to the #2 spot with another $31.8 million, dropping only 20.2%.  This puts it at $97.2 million domestically and $155.8 million worldwide on a production budget of $135 million.

3. STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS

In its fifth week, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has finally been dethroned, dropping down to the #3 spot, bringing in $26.4 million.  This brings its domestic total up to $858.5 million and its worldwide total up to $1.87 billion.  It's definitely on its way to being the only film to ever break $1 billion domestically and will most likely beat out Titanic for the #2 spot on the All-Time Worldwide Box Office chart.  It also managed to become the fifth film to ever reach $1 billion in foreign grosses.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - Ride Along 2 - $35,320,000

#2 - The Revenant - $31,800,000

#3 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens - $26,377,000

#4 - 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi - $16,218,000

#8 - The Big Short - $5,300,000
