12 Days of Movie Reviews: Love Actually

Welcome to the "12 Days of Movie Reviews"!  Today I'll be talking about one of the great romantic comedies of our time, the Christmastime classic...LOVE ACTUALLY.

This star-studded film takes us on a journey through the lives of several people, showing us that love exists everywhere, all of the time, and you never know when it'll hit.

So, that traffic was brutal today...

The cast of this film alone is worth checking it out, with such amazing talent as Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman, Colin Firth, Keira Knightly, Chiwetel Ejiafor, Andrew Lincoln, Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, and Bill Nighy.  But unlike some movies that pack themselves full of big stars (like the horrendous Movie 43), Love Actually is actually a good film.  Hell, even Spider-Man makes an appearance during the greatest nativity play I have ever seen.

I only agreed to do this so I could join the Avengers.

Now, I'm not someone who normally loves romantic comedies.  This has nothing to do with the genre as a whole, rather the fact that a large portion of these films are just terrible and formulaic.  But, I found myself feeling the opposite about this film.  I think the fact that they covered several interconnected stories, instead of focusing on just one, gave them the ability to break away from the normal mold and make something memorable.

What Makes It Chrismasy?

Well, the entire movie is set during the six weeks leading up to Christmas.  And the holiday place a very important role in the decision-making of several of the characters.  Yet, even though Chrismas is pivotal to the plot, it doesn't overwhelm the story, or stories as the case may be.

This is definitely a Christmas classic that I will continue to enjoy every year, and if you have yet to see it, I recommend you do so while the season suits it.

The Merc's Score: 8.5/10
