Box Office Breakdown: 9/25-9/27

   

Welcome to BOX OFFICE BREAKDOWN, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of September 25-27 were Hotel Transylvania 2, The Intern, and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.

Let's take a look at how the Top 3 did this weekend...

1. HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA 2

Adam Sandler's newest animated film, Hotel Transylvania 2, hit theaters this weekend to big success.  Raking in an impressive $48.5 million, breaking the September opening weekend record, held previously by its predecessor, Hotel Transylvania, which brought in $42.5 million back in 2012.  And when combined with its foreign grosses, the film managed to make a worldwide total of $77.7 million on an $80 million budget.

2. THE INTERN

The Intern, the new comedy starring Robert DeNiro and Anne Hathaway, managed a modest $17.7 million on its opening weekend.  This is the second best opening out of the last four Nancy Meyers films, behind 2009's It's Complicated ($22.1M), but fell significantly short of her 2000 film, What Women Want ($33.6 M) starring Mel Gibson.

Combined with its foreign grosses, The Intern was able to bring in a solid worldwide total of $30.2 million on a $40 million budget.

3. MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS

In its second weekend at the box office, the newest installment in the Maze Runner series, The Scorch Trials brought in another $14.3 million, bringing its domestic total up to $51.9 million and its worldwide total up to $174.2 million, falling just short of where its predecessor was at this point in its run.  The third installment, Maze Runner: The Death Cure, is set to begin filming this February with a release date of February 17, 2017.
