With the year coming to a close,
it's natural to look to the future to see what is yet to come. Within the world
of film, there is always so much to look forward to, in all genres, and horror
is one of the best and most unique out there.
Whether it's a brand-new film coming out of the mind of a horror genius, a
terrifying re-imagining of a childhood classic, or the next installment in your
favorite horror franchise, there are so many incredible choices to get you in
the spooky mood, all year round. Here is a great selection of horror films
coming out next year that will surely make 2023 a scary one.
'M3GAN'
Release Date: January 6, 2023
In this movie, a roboticist at a toy company develops a
life-like companion for children named M3GAN (Model 3 Generative Android), and
after gaining custody of her young niece Cady, she asks for her help in
developing the prototype. But when M3GAN becomes self-aware, she begins taking
things too far in an attempt to keep Cady safe, even if that means violence.
James Wan is bringing audiences a brand-new doll to terrorize them in M3GAN,
after creating such horrific characters like Billy from Dead Silence,
and Annabelle from The Conjuring universe. The ever-constant fear that
an artificially intelligent being will become self-aware and begin murdering
people isn't an idea that's new to the genre, however, it's one that is ripe
with potential, if handled correctly, and James Wan is definitely one to trust.
'Unwelcome'
Release Date: January 27, 2023
A young couple inherit a beautiful house in Ireland, but
quickly learn that they're getting far more than they bargained for when
they're told of a group of bloodthristy goblins stalking their new home.
Unwelcome sounds very similar to Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, a
1973 made-for-TV horror flick that was remade in 2010 by Guillermo del Toro,
but this one dives into much creepier territory. According to the trailer, the
townsfolk seem to know all about these creatures, and the previous owner of the
house would leave blood offerings to keep the "Red Hats" away. And
when the new owners fail to do so, things seem to take a turn for the worse.
This added hitch is what will make this film (hopefully) more compelling than
previous, similar ones, and with the cast they've assembled (including Hanna
John-Kamen, Colm Meaney, and Kristian Nairn), the potential is high.
'Knock At The Cabin'
Release Date: February 3, 2023
In M. Night Shyamalan's latest film, a young girl and her
two dads are vacationing at a cabin in the woods (why would anyone do that),
when a group of strangers break in and take them hostage, forcing them to make
a choice... a choice that could either bring on or help stop the coming
apocalypse. Or so they say.
The trailer for Knock at the Cabin is played with a lot of suspense, and
it builds throughout. Hopefully the movie is as successful as the trailer,
because it looks like a wild ride just waiting to happen. Dave Bautista has
become one of those actors who grabs my attention anytime he's in a new project,
and this one is no different. And whether you love or hate M. Night Shyamalan,
he always brings something interesting to the table.
'Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey'
Release Date: February 15, 2023
With Winnie the Pooh entering public domain, it was just a
matter of time before someone created a horror version of these characters'
stories, and that film is Winnie The Pooh: Blood And Honey. It tells the
tale of Christopher Robin, who is now all grown up and has stopped visiting the
Hundred Acre Wood. But in his absence, the food supply dries up, and Pooh,
Piglet, and the rest have grown desperate and hungry, causing them to turn on
one another. And when Christopher returns to see his friends, his perceived
betrayal leads to a murderous rampage.
The synopsis of this film just seems like some wild fever dream, but
thankfully, it's not, as a bloodthirsty Winnie the Pooh is exactly what the
horror genre needs right now. The trailer is intense, and takes these beloved
childhood characters and completely turns them on their heads, giving audiences
a peek into this extremely bloody kill-fest.
'Scream 6'
Release Date: March 10, 2023
The follow-up to 2022's Scream reboot/sequel, Scream
6 takes the hacking and slashing out of Woodsboro and into the Big Apple.
In this one, four of the survvors of the most recent killings decide to leave
town in search of a fresh start for their young lives, but they soon realize
they can't outrun Ghostface... no matter where they go.
Scream (2022) served as a great send off for the legacy characters, and
introduced us to a new crop of potential victims. And while fans won't be
seeing the main final girl, Sydney (Neve Campbell), they will get Courteney Cox
as Gail Weathers, as well as Hayden Panettiere reprising her role as Kirby Reed
from Scream 4. The prospect of branching out from Woodsboro and taking
the killings into a big city is fascinating, and the possibilities are endless.
'Renfield'
Release Date: April 14, 2023
Nicholas Hoult stars as the titular character, Renfield, a
servant of Count Dracula, in this upcoming horror/comedy from director Chris
McKay. When Renfield decides he's done being Dracula's lackey, he ventures off
on his own in modern day New Orleans, and meets a feisty traffic cop named
Rebecca (Awkwafina), who he falls in love with.
One of two non-traditional stories set in the world of Dracula coming out in
2023, Renfield feels like it'll be a breath of fresh air, taking the
comedic route, hopefully in the vein of films like Fright Night and What
We Do In The Shadows. But one of the most intriguing elements of this film
is the fact that the one and only Nicolas Cage will be playing Dracula. This is
the second time Cage has played a vampire in a film (if you haven't seen Vampire's
Kiss, go do that), and he was even originally supposed to play Max Schreck
in the 2000 film Shadow of the Vampire, but chose to cast Willem Dafoe
instead.
'Evil Dead Rise'
Release Date: April 21, 2023
The fifth film in the Evil Dead franchise, Evil
Dead Rise follows Beth and Ellie, sisters in Los Angeles who discover a
mysterious book deep in the bowels of Ellie's apartment building. The book
brings with it demons who possess the living and the dead, and the sisters must
fight to survive and protect their family.
After failed plans for sequels to both Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead and Sam
Raimi's Army of Darkness, and the success of the hit series Ash vs.
Evil Dead, audiences are finally heading back to the world of the Deadites.
While it's still unclear how, or even if, this connects to any of the previous
films, it is clear that fans will be getting their fair share of bloody mayhem.
Evil Dead Rise is heading out of the woods and away from the cabin, and
instead is taking the horror to the big city, which seems to be the hot new
thing, as Scream 6 is doing the same.
'Beau Is Afraid'
Release
Date: April 2023
Ari Aster's upcoming venture with A24 is described as a decades-spanning surrealist horror film set in an alternate present, where a very anxious man named Beau must journey home after the death of his mother, only to be terrorized by some supernatural threat.
It's unclear whether Beau Is Afraid is based on Aster's short film, Beau, but just from the description, it seems likely, as the short follows a neurotic man named Beau who is planning a trip to see his mother, when some weird things start happening. This film will star acclaimed actor Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role, and is speculated to be a 3-4 hour horror comedy that takes some strange turns. This sounds fantastic, and is one to definitely look out for in 2023.
'The Last Voyage Of The Demeter'
Release Date: August 11, 2023
Based on a single chapter from Bram Stoker's classic novel Dracula,
titled "The Captain's Log", this film explores a series of strange
events that take place on the Demeter, a merchant ship carrying fifty unmarked
wooden crates from Carpathia to London. But when the Demeter finally arrives at
its destination, the ship has been severely damaged, and the crew is nowhere to
be found.
The story of Dracula is one that's been told time and time again for well over
a century, but the story of how Dracula made his way to London in Bram Stoker's
iconic book is one that's never really been explored too deeply. This will be a
very different type of Dracula story, one that will hopefully be as interesting
as the premise promises, and with a cast including Corey Hawkins, Liam
Cunningham, and David Dastmalchian, the potential is high.
'Saw X'
Release Date: October 27, 2023
Tobin Bell returns as John Kramer in the latest installment
in the Saw franchise, Saw X. Plot details for the tenth chapter
in this horror series have been kept under wraps, but many are speculating that
it will be prequel, perhaps diving deeper into John's life before the traps,
and all the tragic events that led up to him becoming the infamous Jigsaw
Killer, some of which we see in Saw 4.
While the plot is still a mystery, it was revealed that alongside Tobin Bell
will be the return of Jigsaw's apprentice, Amanda Young, played by Shawnee
Smith. Will audiences learn more about her past as well? Perhaps they'll show
more of a connection that we haven't seen yet between the two characters. But,
no matter what happens, fans can be sure there will be plenty of traps and
death to go around.
