The Merc's TOP 5 MCU FILMS

With the release of Marvel's latest hit film, Black Panther, and Avengers: Infinity War less than two months away, I felt like it was a perfect time to put out my ranking of the 5 best films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

There are so many great films in this franchise, and of the 18 that have come out since its inception back in 2008, only a handful have stood out as the best of the bunch.  But before we get into the main list, I want to give a special shout out to the one that started it all...IRON MAN!  This is where is all began.  If Marvel and director Jon Favreau hadn't succeeded in such a spectacular way with this film, we wouldn't have the MCU as it stands.  We probably wouldn't have any of the films in this list, and if I were doing a Top 10, it would definitely have made it.  So thank you Iron Man for making this all possible.

And so, without further ado, here are The Merc's TOP 5 MCU FILMS!!

5. MARVEL'S THE AVENGERS

This was the film everyone was waiting for ever since Nick Fury showed up at the end of Iron Man talking about the "Avengers Initiative".  And that wait would pay off with one of the best superhero movies up to that point.  We finally got to see all of the heroes we'd been watching over the last four years team up and take down an alien horde.  Iron Man and Captain America's disdain for one another begins in this film, builds in Age of Ultron, and comes to a head in Civil War.  It's perfectly set up.  They are such different people with such different ideals.  It's clear, when looking back on it, that Kevin Feige knew exactly where he was taking these characters and their relationships with one another.

We also got some of the most memorable moments in this movie, one of my absolute favorites being the scene between Hulk and Loki.  This was a bit of a shock scene, and become one of the funniest, most memorable parts of the entire film.  That and when Hulk punches Thor out of nowhere.  Gold.

And without this film we wouldn't have the ABC series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., whether you think that's a good thing or not.  I personally am a fan of the show, especially the current season, and it's Greg Clark's Agent Phil Coulson that truly makes the show as great as it is.  He is fantastic, and if he were still kicking around in the films, this show wouldn't exist.

The Avengers marked the end of Marvel's Phase One of their cinematic universe and paved the way for some fantastic films to grace the silver screen, particularly the next four films on this list.

4. CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR

Captain America: Civil War is thought to be one of the best MCU films by most fans, and I agree, however, I don't hold it quite as high as most.  Of the three "Avengers-type" films (this one is commonly referred to as Avengers 2.5), this one is definitely the best, but its not even the best of the three Captain America films.  But still, I can't deny that the Russo Brothers managed to knock it out of the park in almost every aspect.  We also saw the introduction of two great characters to the MCU - Black Panther and Spider-Man.

These two characters brought with them two great films, one of which I'll discuss later on this list.  But it was their time on screen in this film that made me fall in love with them, and increased my desire to see more from them.  We finally got, in my opinion, the best version of Peter Parker that we've ever had, and that, combined with a good villain and strong performances, guaranteed it a spot on this list.

3. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Back in 2014, Marvel Studios teamed up with with a very talented indie director, James Gunn, for one of the riskiest films they've released to date.  Guardians of the Galaxy consists of a ragtag team of criminals that no one outside of the comic book fandom had ever heard of.  This is brought into the film itself multiple times with people not knowing who they (specifically Star-Lord) are, and it makes for some comedy gold.

Speaking of comedy, the humor in this film is fantastic.  It's definitely the funniest MCU film, but the humor is smartly done.  And the chemistry between all of these very different characters and the actors who play them is palpable.  Guardians of the Galaxy instantly became one of my favorites, and has remained there since.

Captain America

2. CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER

2014 was the year of Marvel for me, as the two films released that year became my two favorite MCU films ever released, and they stayed there until this year.  Captain America: The Winter Soldier was such a great surprise.  It is so drastically different from the first Captain America, in both story and tone, and that is one of the many things that make this film great.

It may be a comic book movie, but at its heart it's a 70's style spy thriller, with such fast-paced action that it never leaves you bored.  It's so engaging from start to finish, especially the scenes with Winter Soldier, which are some of my absolute favorites.  And Black Widow always makes things better.

1. BLACK PANTHER

This year saw the release of Marvel's latest entry, Black Panther, and wow, was it amazing.  I could talk a lot about this film (and if you'd like to read more, check out my full review HERE) but I'll keep my comments here brief.  I was so pleasantly surprised by just how much I actually loved this film.  It felt like an almost perfect comic book movie, and is by far the best the MCU has put out yet, and I was hesitant to let myself believe this because of just how much I loved Winter Soldier.

Black Panther was beautiful and powerful, and managed to strike a great balance between drama and humor.  This is the type of film that Marvel needs to continue making, and hopefully they'll do just that.

Well, there it is folks, my list of the Top 5 MCU Films ever released.  What did you think of my list?  Do you agree?  If not, let me know what your list looks like in the comments.
