The new trailer for MOTHER!, the newest project from director Darren Aronofsky, is here. Check it out.
I love me some Aronofsky. From his debut in 1998 with Pi, to 2014's Noah, his filmwork has yet to disappoint me. But my first reaction to this trailer is that Mother! may be the end of that streak. From the look of it, this is just another entry in the tired "marriage is hell" subgenre of thrillers, with a weak little wifey terrorized by her big hairy brute of a husband. Or maybe it's "hell is other people". Jennifer Lawrence's troubles only seem to begin when the guests start showing up. At first I want to just write this off as another predicable bit of theatrical agitprop and watch something else instead.
But then I remember two important points. First, this movie was made by a guy who has built his career by subverting expectations. Yes, Javier Bardem may be the bane of J-Law's existence, but it's very doubtful that Aronofsky will let the conflict at the heart of Mother! be as simple as it appears. Second, trailers often lie. Don't believe me? Did you think The Dark Tower was going to be a good movie, or that Valerian was an empty special-effects popcorn flick, based on the trailers? I certainly did. And yet here we are, knowing now that the former was disappointing at best, and the latter may be one of the best movies of the year, or at least the summer. Trailers mislead these days. And so, on the strength of the director's reputation, I'll be going to see this one. If I'm wrong, so be it. All good things must end. But I don't think I am. I think we're in for another surprise.
Mother! debuts on September 15th.
