Just when you thought the games were over (Dun dun duuuuun), the first trailer for Jigsaw, the eighth in the Saw series, is released.
I was aware of this movie back when they were still calling it Saw: Legacy, so the title change made me think the powers that be had gone the prequel route, doing for John Kramer what had previously been done for the likes of Hannibal Lecter and Norman Bates. I'm glad to see that's not the case, as I think we got plenty of back story on the birth of Jigsaw over the course of the previous films.
Sick, degenerate weirdo that I am, I actually liked the second-to-seventh Saw movies, though I will concede none of the sequels can touch the original. So I'm intrigued by how the justification for an eighth installment is going to go. The story of the original cycle was tied up more-or-less neatly at the end of the seventh film, though the door was left open just a crack for a follow-up, and it looks like that opportunity has been taken.
There's not a lot to go on in this trailer that we couldn't already guess. A new heir to the throne of John Kramer, who's been dead since Saw III, has appeared and, we can assume, started offing people in ways that only Eli Roth could love. Is this person a disciple, someone who has survived one of Jigsaw's games (calling them "traps" doesn't sound right to me) and been changed, or another pretender, who just gets off on the brutality? If it is a disciple, why start the work again now? Whatever the case, gruesome kills and a pretty decent mystery (at least by horror movie standards) are in our near future.
Jigsaw premiers on October 27th.
