WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'Guardians of the Galaxy 2' Dominates Once Again, While 'King Arthur' Fails To Live Up To The Legend

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of May 12-14 were Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Snatched, and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 proved yet again that Marvel Studios is a mega powerhouse that should never be underestimated.  However, the same cannot be said for Guy Ritchie's King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, which only managed to bring in a little over half of the industry prediction.

On a side note, Disney's Beauty and the Beast continues to hang on to a spot in the Top 5 as it crosses $1.2 billion worldwide.  We also saw the new Bollywood film Baahubali 2: The Conclusion hang on to a spot in the Top 10, bringing in another almost $1.6 million domestically.

THE TOP 3:

1. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2

In its second week at bat, the latest Marvel Studios film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, has once again destroyed the competition, more than tripling the haul of the #2 film, and more than quadrupling the #3 film, with a domestic total of $65.2 million.  This is only a 55.5% drop from week one, which is pretty standard.  This weekend's performance brings the film's total domestic gross up to $248.4  million, with a worldwide total of $632.2 million on a $200 million production budget.

2. SNATCHED

The latest Amy Schumer film, Snatched, opened up this weekend, and outperforming initial predictions, bringing in $19.5 million domestically.  Unfortunately, it was t able to grab audiences the way Trainwreck did back in 2015, which brought in $30 million on its opening weekend.  Snatched managed to top off the worldwide total with $22.6 million on a $42 million production budget.

3. KING ARTHUR: LEGEND OF THE SWORD

The latest adaptation of the legendary King Arthur story, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, also hit theaters this weekend, and unfortunately for the man who pulled the sword from the stone, it did not live up to the legend.  The film only brought in $15.3 million, well below the industry predictions of $23-$25 million, with a worldwide total of $44.9 million on a whopping $175 million production budget.  Needless to say, we probably won't be seeing another King Arthur story told for a while.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 - $65,263,492

#2 - Snatched - $19,542,248

#3 - King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - $15,371,270
