Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results. The TOP 3 films for the weekend of May 19-21 were Alien: Covenant, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Everything, Everything.
Let's take a look at this week's box office results:
WHAT STANDS OUT?
THE TOP 3:
1. ALIEN: COVENANT
The sequel to Prometheus and the latest installment of the hugely popular Alien franchise, Alien: Covenant, has finally hit theaters, and although it didn't do quite as well as hoped, it did still manage to take the top spot this week with $36.1 million. But don't fret, as it also pulled in a foreign gross of $81.7 million for a worldwide total of $117.8 million on a $97 million production budget. This definitely bodes well for Ridley Scott's planned follow-ups.
2. GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2
In its third week at bat, the latest Marvel Studios film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,
slipped down one spot to become #2 this week, bringing in $34.6 million, dropping only 46.9%. This brings the film's total
domestic gross up to a very impressive $301.3 million, with a worldwide total of $732.8 million on a $200 million production budget. Does it have the pull to make it into the Billion Dollar Club? I guess we'll have to wait and see.
3. EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING
The new indie film from WB and MGM, Everything, Everything surprised everyone this week, outperforming industry expectations, by bringing in $11.7 million on a small production budget of just $10 million. Though, unfortunately, critics haven't responded well to it, so don't expect it to make a huge amount at the box office.
