WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'LEGO Batman' Tops The Box Office Over Fellow Newcomers 'Fifty Shades Darker' And 'John Wick: Chapter 2'

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of February 10-12 were The LEGO Batman Movie, Fifty Shades Darker, and John Wick: Chapter 2.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

This was a great weekend for new films, as all three debuts took the top 3 spots.  And as predicted, LEGO Batman reigned supreme this weekend, trailed closely by the latest installment in the Fifty Shades franchise.  Even the #3 film this weekend, John Wick: Chapter 2, managed to bring in over $30 million domestically.  Definitely a great weekend for film fans all around.

THE TOP 3:

1. THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

It's no surprise that The LEGO Batman Movie took the top spot this weekend, as the breakout star of 2014's The LEGO Movie made huge waves with a series of fantastic trailers, TV spots, and even a LEGO Batman version of MTV Cribs.  The film managed to rake in an impressive $55.6 million domestically, with a foreign gross of $37 million, bringing its worldwide total up to $92.6 million, already topping its modest $80 million production budget.  I think it's safe to say, we will see more LEGO films, and especially more LEGO Batman films, in our future.

2. FIFTY SHADES DARKER

Christian and Anastasia are back in the next part of the Fifty Shades series, Fifty Shades Darker.  The sequel to the controversial Fifty Shades of Grey had a great opening weekend, bringing in $46.8 million domestically.  Though, its foreign grosses were far more impressive, totaling $100.1 million for a worldwide total of $146.9 million on a very modest $55 million, which definitely secures the chances of the third film in the series getting made.

3. JOHN WICK: CHAPTER 2

Baba Yaga is back, so you better run for your life!  John Wick: Chapter 2 opened up this weekend with an explosive domestic haul of $30 million, doubling the opening weekend of the first film.  Combined with the $10.6 million foreign gross, John Wick: Chapter 2 managed a worldwide total of $40.6 million on a $40 million production budget.  And if the numbers continue to rise, don't be surprised if a third installment gets green lit soon.
