WEEKEND ROUNDUP: 'LEGO Batman' & 'Fifty Shades Darker' Dominate The Box Office For Second Weekend

Welcome to WEEKEND ROUNDUP, where we discuss this weekends box office results.  The TOP 3 films for the weekend of February 17-19 were The LEGO Batman MovieFifty Shades Darker, and The Great Wall.

Let's take a look at this week's box office results:

WHAT STANDS OUT?

The biggest stand outs to me this week were the facts that LEGO Batman and Fifty Shades Darker topped off the box office yet again this weekend.  The Great Wall and Fist Fight, both new releases this weekend, managed to secure a spot in the Top 5, but the other newcomer, A Cure For Wellness, wasn't so lucky, coming in at #10 with only $4.2 million.

THE TOP 3:

1. THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE

It's no surprise that The LEGO Batman Movie took the top spot again this weekend, as the breakout star of 2014's The LEGO Movie made huge waves with critics and fans alike.  The film managed to rake in another $34.2 million, a drop of merely 37.7% from last week.  This puts its domestic total up to $107.1 million with a worldwide total of $179.2 million, more than doubling its modest $80 million production budget.  I think it's safe to say, we will see more LEGO films, and especially more LEGO Batman films, in our future.

2. FIFTY SHADES DARKER

The sequel to the controversial Fifty Shades of Grey, titled Fifty Shades Darker, held on to the #2 spot for the second weekend, bringing in another $21 million, for a domestic total of $92 million.  This makes for a drop of only 56.3%, which is much lower than most people anticipated.  And with an impressive foreign gross, Fifty Shades Darker managed to gather a worldwide total of $279.2 million on a very modest $55 million production budget, which definitely secures the chances of the third film in the series getting made.

3. THE GREAT WALL

The new historical fantasy film, The Great Wall, starring Matt Damon, hit theaters this weekend, bringing in $18.1 million domestically.  This may sound small, and it is, but with a massive foreign gross of $244.6 million (over $170 million alone just from China), this film managed a very impressive worldwide total of $262.7 million on a $150 million production budget.  Definitely a successful film for Universal Studios.

TOP 10 RUNDOWN:

#1 - The LEGO Batman Movie - $34,225,000

#2 - Fifty Shades Darker - $20,966,845
