What's On Netflix?: ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK

Welcome to another installment of WHAT'S ON NETFLIX?, where we pick out a series or film currently playing on Netflix and review it for the fans. This week's selection is the funny yet provocative series ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK.

I'm sure most of my readers have heard of or watched this show. Orange is the New Black has been on Netflix for four seasons. It's been renewed for a fifth, sixth, and seventh season. However, I'll be concentrating on the events of the first season.

The first season starts off with Piper Chapman, played by Taylor Schilling, getting sentenced to 15 months in prison for transporting a bag of drug money for her girlfriend at the time. She had thought that was all behind her and had moved on with her fiancé, Larry. However, that's not the case when Piper runs into a familiar face from the past while in prison.

Actually, Piper meets quite a few women who have different stories to tell. One inmate they call Crazy Eyes, played by Uzo Adubo who won an Emmy for her role, wants Piper to be her prison wife. Crazy Eyes is kind to Piper; but it doesn't end well. So it doesn't seem Piper is having the best time in prison.

Piper comes off as weak and sheltered and the other inmates use it to their advantage. The inmate called Red, who runs the kitchen, starves Piper out because she insulted her food. However, Piper learns how to survive with her wits. She thinks she'll be okay, until her ex shows up in the same prison.

I enjoy watching this show because I love how the female inmates come together to help each other out. But, there is still plenty of strife and conflict in prison no matter what. Some people may be curious about how realistic Orange is the New Black isIt's based off Piper Kerman's memoir, 'Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison.'  As with any other movie or series based off a person's life, there is definitely real authenticity to Orange is the New Black.

This series has received much praise from critics for humanizing prisoners and being open about sexuality, race, and body type. Season 1 has a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and also an audience rating of 98%. In its first season, Orange is the New Black had 12 Emmy Nominations. That's pretty fantastic for a show's first season.

Orange is the New Black is a great show. It deals with social issues such as prison reform and transgender rights. This is not a show for children. But, it's a cool show to watch with your date/significant other on cold wintry night.
